Against Each Other?

     Focusing on the question "Is our struggle against each
other?" the December 1993 retreat of the African and Latino
Youth Summit (ALYS) in Big Bear Lake California (pictured
here) engaged 80 high school youth and advisors from the Los
Angeles, Santa Monica, Inglewood and Compton school
districts. Throughout the weekend the high school teams were
encouraged to reflect on the institutional and interpersonal
sources of tension between Africans and Latinos. Through
workshops on conflict resolution and political education
students worked together to develop campus-specific action
plans aimed at building solidarity among their peers.
     The retreat culminated with the formation of an ALYS
support network for future work among campus teams. For
