<< Return of the Nerds | Main | Returning Max's Plug >> May 20, 2002Bankrupt PoliticsIn A Quiet Attack on Women Professor Elizabeth Warren writes, "After five years of enormous contributions and lobbying from the financial industry, Congress now stands ready to dismantle protection for families under the nation's bankruptcy code." Oddly, the major barrier to passage is a Senate provision barring anti-abortion protesters from using bankruptcy laws to escapte court judgements, putting conservatives in a bind between passing the bill to please their corporate masters and thereby pissing off their fundamentalist voters. You can admire the machiavellian politics of the Democrats who inserted the provision and despair that they allowed this corporate payoff to pass the Senate in the first place.Posted by Nathan at May 20, 2002 12:38 AM Related posts:
