<< Cynicism & Balanced Budgets | Main | Labor Monday- MLK Day Edition >> January 20, 2003The Numbers GameThe media reports on the weekend marches in DC and San Francisco are ridiculous on undercounting the numbers. Without playing out the overestimates of the organizers versus the undercounts of the media, I thought these pictures could speak for themselves. Take the average of double the cops' estimate and two-thirds of the organizer's estimate. (Simplified, that cops plus one-third organizers). So in L.A. last week, we had 5-7,000 + 1/3*15,000=10-12,000. In D.C., it would be 30,000 + 1/3*500,000=196,000. The October D.C. March was eventually agreed upon at 100k, and everyone agreed this was a lot larger, so I think the formula works. (The cops didn't supply an estimate for Saturday's march, so I went with the Fox news number). Of course, sometimes the cops inflate their numbers to justify additional spending on toys, so it's not perfect.
