<< Seizing the Domain Names & First Amendment | Main | Turkish War Support Unconstitutional? >> February 28, 2003AFL-CIO Opposes WarA historic decision by the AFL-CIO to oppose the war: "The president has not fulfilled his responsibility to make a compelling and coherent explanation to the American people and the world as to the need for military action against Iraq at this time," the council, which represents 65 unions, said. "America has always been a peace-loving nation, slow to take up arms, and resolute in pursuit of diplomatic resolution to crises. This administration's actions are sadly eroding that reputation...What is most significant here is the almost absolute reapproachment between labor and the broad progressive movement which had remained suspicious and even hostile for decades due to the bitter divisions that grew over Vietnam. Posted by: Paleo at February 28, 2003 09:20 AM The AFL-CIO decision only confirms that "the Left has lost the ability to think right", just like half the Democrats. Come election time, both will pay. Sooner or later it will become clear TO ALL who supports the liberation of Iraq and who opposes it. Posted by: Joseph Alexander Norland at February 28, 2003 06:44 PM You know, even if you take the above poster at his word -- that the AFL is opposing the war because they're Dems -- it's still significant. As Harold Meyerson points out in the L.A. Weekly this week, the anti-war movement is the most mobilized the broad Democratic base has been in recent memory. While Freepers have taken this as an indictment, no anti-war movement has ever been so widespread to represent the momentum of a political party (perhaps nuclear freeze in the 80s?). So if we can't stop this bloodletting, perhaps it means we can stop the next one (as long as it's scheduled for post-2004). JK (this is not to dignify the "liberation of Iraq" swindle for a second) Posted by: Josh at February 28, 2003 07:56 PM This is indeed great news. Almost good enough to make one forget about the latest union density figures the BLS released this week. Ugh! Posted by: Mark Rickling at March 2, 2003 03:41 PM Post a comment
