Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsI do have a nice little Bolivia story. Under pressure from the IMF, Bolivia privatized its railways. In particular, a Chilean company took over much of the network. Now the third largest city in Bolivia is high in the Andes- I don't recall the name but it begins with "Ch"- and, as part of the contract, the Chilean company was required to maintain service to this city, which has no other transport access to the outside world, i.e. the rest of the country. But the Chilean company didn't honor the terms and shut down the rail link to this city. Since this is high in the Andes, the rail link, which had been laboriously constructed many years ago, needs constant maintenance or else it will degrade into an irrecuperable condition in a few short years. Of course, objections have been raised and, as far as I know, the matter is still pending. Posted by: john c. halasz at October 15, 2003 05:33 AM and we thought California was tough! There are no plans to regularly run that route because people prefer to pay less money for a faster trip using modern highways. Posted by: Pablo at January 4, 2004 12:24 AM Post a comment
