<< Rightwingers: Bad Politics in Medicare Bill | Main | AARP's Bogus Poll of Members >> November 21, 2003Bill Richardson: Vice President?Bill Richardson, New Mexico governor, former Energy Secretary and former negotiator with North Korea, held a "Love-In" with Howard Dean. (slow link) As chair of the Democratic National Convention, Richardson can't endorse anyone, but how's this for a "non-endorsement": "Gov. Dean has an impressive array of endorsements from New Mexico from Hispanic and Native American leaders," Richardson said. "Literally, my organization's endorsed him."So, Richardson doesn't endorse Dean, but everyone who supports him in office does. Fair minded neutrality, yep :) I've long thought Richardson was on the shortest of short lists for VP possibilities. He is the most prominent Hispanic elected leader in the courty, would bring a southwest regional heft to the ticket, and has the foreign policy cred needed-- what other Democrat has Bush called on to bail him out, as he did when he asked Richardson to help with negotiations with North Korea? If you had to bet, Clark, Graham and Richardson are the most likely candidates for the second spot. Posted by Nathan at November 21, 2003 08:29 AM Related posts:
Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsI agree he would a lot of sense for someone like Dean, although he's too DLC for my taste, especially when it comes to trade. However, in September he said that he was committed to serving his full term as Governor, and that he wouldn't accept the number two spot. Graham would be the best fit for Dean. Florida, of course, plus he has foreign policy experience. And he's available. Posted by: Paleo at November 21, 2003 08:58 AM The three you listed make sense--Paleo's info is correct, however, regarding Richardson, so he may be out of the picture. With Graham, the caveat is that it's not clear he can actually carry Florida, so I think you have to poll him down there until about 10 minutes before you make the selection. It's critical that, given the closeness of the electoral map, whomever the Dems pick can actually carry a key swing state. Having said that, I'd add Jay Rockefeller to the mix--he's very popular in WVA, is also loved by the unions there (USWA and UMWA), and has now admitted that his vote for the war was a mistake (also has the intelligence committee cred for foreign policy)--a bit blue-blooded, esp. combined with Dean, but heightens contrast between public service rich and parasitical rich (you know who). And Kos raises the interesting possibility of Max Cleland today--utterly perfect, except that he won't carry Georgia for the ticket. Posted by: yeselson at November 21, 2003 02:03 PM I honestly don't see Clark as VP. What would he do? He'd be much more valuable in the cabinet or NSC or somesuch. Dean as an outsider will need someone who can speak "Congresstalk" and twist arms, cheerlead and get his agenda passed, so I agree with Graham as a choice, besides the Fla. reasoning. Too bad Gep is being such a dork; I wonder if a heartland VP might be the best balance. Posted by: Kevin at November 21, 2003 05:14 PM Keep the talk up of Richardson as VP, Kerry/Richardson would be legitimate. Imagine running on the stance that we've screwed up in North Korea for three years, letting them build bombs underneath our "watchless" eye and that we've got the only man who can claim that he knows what to do? Sweet. Posted by: alex at January 22, 2004 07:32 PM Richardson is certainly qualified for the post, the last time somebody had so much on a resume was George H.W. Bush back in 1980. His executive experience is the final piece. Kerry/Richardson could be strong medicine. Graham only makes sense if it is certain that he can deliver Florida and that is far from certain. Posted by: Stevie King at February 8, 2004 09:10 AM i do not think that Kerry should pick Richardson. I am Latino and do not believe that this will help Kerry. Gov. Richardson has a great resume, but Kerry has to pick someone from the south. Edwards would be a good choice, or Bill Nelson or Evan Bayh. we definitly will see what happens though.
