<< Bush Far Behind in Quinnipiac Poll | Main | Lies in Bush Budget >> February 03, 2004Utah Secedes from WorldOkay, Utah has always seemed a bit of its own world, with its rightwing politics and all, but this vote by the Utah House is impressively out there: The Utah House of Representatives voted Monday to urge Congress to withdraw from the United Nations, asserting the organization was a threat to American sovereignty. With Georgia voting to end discussion of slavery and evolution in public school texts and Utah seeking to secede from the UN, the conservative movement is establishing new benchmarks for wackodom. Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsUtah's legislature is always a treat. They have thus far banned abortion procedures not used in the state in over a decade, are about to bar "indirect" funding for abortions (so you can shut down state funding to hospitals); last year they legislated out of existence two state health inspector jobs because an inspector did his job and ordered an apartment complex to make the swimming pool water safe. The list goes on and on. Posted by: T. Gracchus at February 3, 2004 09:26 AM Wow, these people are actually voted into office? I thought they were mostly confined to putting up roadside billboards in places like Idaho. Posted by: wvmcl at February 4, 2004 03:46 PM too xenophobic and paranoid probably, potential democrats maybe. certainly its an angle worth exploring so don't get to prejudiced. i can't imagine these people being happy about bush's big spending, anti-states' rights and pro-immigration policies. Posted by: zero the hero at February 4, 2004 10:19 PM I live in UTah and get a big kick out of our legislature. Utah has a lot of little whistle stop towns and the crazies mostly come from there. In a lot of ways, it is a very progressive state. Posted by: Lynne at February 6, 2004 10:44 PM I live in Texas and go to college in Utah. Double shot of insanity.
