<< A Good Use of Pension Funds | Main | No Bush Financial Advantage? >> March 26, 2004Banning Books in North CarolinaBanning gay marriage isn't enough for the rightwing. They want to ban discussion of the idea. So a North Carolina Congressman is calling for a statewide ban from school libraries of a children's book that discusses two men marrying. The rightwing complains that judges are undemining democracy by not waiting for a vote of elected representatives-- something my anti-judicial review views agree with -- but banning books and debate is even more anti-democratic. Posted by: Amy Phillips at March 26, 2004 03:21 PM I really disdain slippery slope arguments, but, really, where could this lead? No more Catullus (Roman poet with lots of vulgar and homosexual references). No Les Miserables (because it makes a hero out of a character who acts "inconsistent[ly] with [a different] North Carolina law"). I could go on. Posted by: QuickSauce at March 26, 2004 08:30 PM According to the Congressman, parents "have a reasonable expectation that their tax dollars will not be used to further undermine their value systems." Wouldn't that be great? Posted by: Nick at March 29, 2004 12:19 PM Post a comment
