<< Bogus Growth Numbers | Main | Anti-Choicers Use Camera as Weapon >> May 27, 2002Bloomberg Mandates MD Abortion TrainingStarting in July, abortion training will become part of the required curriculum, rather than a generally bypassed elective, for obstetrics and gynecology residents in New York's 11 public hospitals. In signing onto this initiative, new mayor Mike Bloomberg is addressing one of the most critical issues facing the pro-choice movement, the increasing scarcity of doctors trained in the procedure. Of the roughly 2,000 doctors who now perform abortions, more than half are over 50, and many are nearing retirement. Despite the legal status of abortion, the combination of harassment and neglect of training of new doctors means that 85 percent of U.S. counties don't have abortion providers. Hopefully, this New York City initiative will encourage other residency programs around the country to make such training a required part of their curriculum.Posted by Nathan at May 27, 2002 05:29 PM Related posts:
