<< Return ICANN to the Commerce Dept. | Main | US to Lose on Kosovo Threat >> July 03, 2002Right Joins Big Laden in Attacking NYCSome rightwingers are actually calling for launching an economic boycott of New York City. Joining their fellow Taliban, they think New York is a bed of religious sin due to its friendliness to gay unions. Posted by Nathan at July 3, 2002 10:42 AM Related posts:
Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: Commentsdid right-wing groups form a significant economic backbone for nyc before this? Posted by: alisa at July 3, 2002 01:13 PM Ahhhhh! You are comparing the greatest city in the world with some small time burg that most people couldn't find on a map even today. Quick, is Oklahoma City even in Oklahoma? OK, I have a friend from there, and there was that great musical, but gee, where is Kansas City? Anyway, cultural conservatives have been bashing New York for decades, if not centuries, and NYC is defined by much, much, more than one ghastly day in September. Oklahoma City without the bombing is not known for much. You are looking for some sort of symmetry that simply isn't here. Regards, Posted by: Tom Maguire at July 5, 2002 11:03 AM If this keeps Freepers out of New York, the city should consider itself blessed. Posted by: David Ehrenstein at July 6, 2002 08:26 PM In the abstract I agree with all these comments, but the interesting reality is that we know that cynical Republicans would have treated parallel comments by liberals as treasonous aid and comfort to the enemy. And as I said, the parallel of the gay-hating US Right and the gay-hating Taliban teeming up in their disdain for New York is far more telling than many Rightists admit. The lack of self-consciousness by many in singing "God Bless America" as you declare war on Islamic jihadists still continues to amaze me.
