Helping their cause is that Sweden has continued to deliver strong growth and low unemployment along with its social benefits. Sweden remains that uncomfortable reality for conservatives across the world-- a high tax welfare state that delivers the social goods and good employment for its population. So much for the idea that only neoliberal wannabe governments can keep electoral power today. Hopefully, Germany's more "New Democrat" Schoeder regime will learn that lesson if he sweaks to reelection in the next few weeks. And the American Dems should remember that "tax and spend" used to be a proud formula for reelection-- as long as people get value for their money like health care for their kids, they will support increased taxes. Even though such a claim is, not to put too fine a point on it, complete baloney. Bravo to the Swedes for daring not to follow the script.
