Schumer who lays out why explicit ideological tests for judges is healthy for democracy and honesty in politics: In the past year, I have worked hard to make ideology an explicit part of the judicial confirmation process. Simply put, I believe it is time we stop playing gotcha politics -- looking for petty personal peccadilloes to disqualify a candidate -- and start admitting that the substantive viewpoint of judicial nominees legitimately drives us to oppose certain candidates for the bench.This is similar to the points I made last year in a column Partisanship vs. the Politics of Personal Destruction (which also had my view on Andrew Sullivan and the "bare backing" controversy for all you Sully obsessives).
