I'm about as far left as it gets, but I feel McCain has the kind of character that transends partisan politics, and I'd cast my vote for him as president in a second. I saw a program awhile back on American POWs during the Vietnam War, featuring McCain and his comrades. At one point, through the influence of McCain's family, he was offered release, but refused to go without his fellow prisoners, despite the fact that what he was warned by his captors that it would be very bad for him if he remained (as it would embarass the North Vietamese gov.). Nevertheless, he stayed, knowing he would be subjected to physical and psychological torture and very likely death. This is a man with more honor & courage then most of us will ever know. Contrast that to W's cushy post in the Ntl Guard (and even with that he went AWOL for several months). It doesn't surprise me then, that McCain's since of honor and patriotism leads him to speak against the policies of his own party.
