<< CHICAGO and the Big Lie | Main | Halliburton Hates Democracy, even for Shareholders >> March 23, 2003A Popular War?The media is playing up the popularity of the war now that it's started, but polls still show that 35% of the population wanted more time for inspections-- only 62% approve the rush to war. This compares to 79% approval in 1991 after the war started, compared to 16% that thought the country should wait. As to the war on terrorism: In the latest Times/CBS News poll, 59 percent said the onset of hostilities has increased the threat of terrorism against the United States and only 8 percent thought the risk has decreased.Beneath the surface of rallying around the troops, the American people know that this war is feeding hatred and danger to the American people. Which is why hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, who known terrorism better than any other city, marched against the war yesterday. Posted by Nathan at March 23, 2003 07:51 PM Related posts:

We all know that we are going to reap the whirlwind with this illegal and immoral war. Think people want to travel to the U.S. for vacations anymore? Our tourism industry as well as the world's is already feeling the pain. How many more lost jobs? How many jobs tied to tourism will also be lost? How many other industries will be affected? Posted by: Tin Soldier at March 23, 2003 08:36 PM Hi, Posted by: Robert S. Morgan at March 23, 2003 09:28 PM Majority support is not impressive for ongoing war where troops are at current risk. Not when a large chunk of that "popularity" is supporting the troops, not the war, and it's the most unpopular war in its first week in the modern history of America. But if conservatives want to delude themselves on the popularity and stable support for this war, please go ahead. Posted by: Nathan Newman at March 23, 2003 09:41 PM Numbers always shoot up when war starts. Always. But a smart poll watcher can tell whether the support is deep or thin, and this support is thin. The opposition of the entire world, plus the peace movement at home, has had an impact. And yes, I think the best argument the peace movement can be using right now is that this war is making us less secure, not more secure.
