<< 300-400,000 March in NYC | Main | A Popular War? >> March 23, 2003CHICAGO and the Big LieThis movie review of Chicago is also a devastating analysis of Bush's use of the "Big Lie" in selling his war: citing forged Nigerian documents known to be fake or otherwise promoting the idea that Iraq planned 911 to promote a non-existent link between Al-Qaeda and Hussein: And like their "Chicago" counterparts, the Washington press corps were more than willing to buy fictions if instructed to do so by the puppeteer. "Eight times [Mr. Bush] interchanged the war on Iraq with the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001," wrote The New York Observer, "and eight times he was unchallenged." The unproven but constantly reiterated White House claim of a Qaeda-Saddam Hussein connection has now become a settled fact, not to be questioned at a press conference any more than any "Chicago" reporter challenges the mythical pregnancy Billy Flynn flogs in his propaganda campaign to save Roxie Hart. And now there is news that CIA agents have been pressured to insert non-existent links in official intelligence reports. So to sell his "big lie", Bush is corrupting and politicizing intelligence just when honest intelligence is needed most to save our lives. Which is where we move from entertainment and politics to the deadly danger of tolerating Bush's "Big Lie" strategy. Posted by Nathan at March 23, 2003 05:29 PM Related posts:

It reminds me of the movie "Rollerball" with James Caan and John Houseman. Violent entertainment to keep the masses preoccupied while the corporations make their money.
