<< Headline Says It | Main | The Lies of War >> March 29, 2003Polls: UN not Bush Should Rebuild IraqDespite all the conservative UN-bashing, polls still show that 61% of Americans think the UN should lead rebuilding and setting up the post-war government in Iraq. With Bush auctioning off the country to the highest campaign contributor, it's no suprise but must be distressing for the unilateralist warhawks. For instance, they don't want to take over Iraq and they don't want to steal all its resources. Posted by: John Isbell at March 29, 2003 04:34 PM Which is precisely why the U.N. should have nothing to do with providing a fig leaf of legitimacy for a U.S. occupation of Iraq. Unless the U.S. military presence is removed from Iraq in the aftermath of this war by a U.N. force, the U.N. should only provide humanitarian aid. In any case, I sincerely doubt the U.N. will be fooled again by the U.S. or the U.K.'s self-serving blandishments regarding an 'international' approach on Iraq. Posted by: David Wilford at March 29, 2003 05:37 PM Well, the Saddam's regime was bad and it is good it has been removed. The fact that in the whole war US lost fewer soldiers than Russians attacking one city in Chechenya is the best proof that the average Iraqi wanted Saddam to be removed. Otherwise battle for Baghdad would be a bloody hell that US would loose politically. Now, Iraq needs more stability and removing the forces too soon will just lead to another post-dictatorship mayhem as we know from Yugoslavia or Kongo or Rwanda. On the other hand US does need military bases in the region and Iraq is a much better option than Saudi Arabia.
