<< Flexibility Equals Patronage at DOD | Main | Lies and Unemployment Stats >> June 05, 2003Blackmail on Child Tax CreditThe GOP are just disgusting. They write a bill to help their wealthy friends and deliberately leave the working poor without help. Then when they are called on it, they hold any tax change hostage to even more tax cuts for the well off-- in this case demanding that if the working poor get the tax credit, then so should richer families making as much as $150,000 per year. It's not like those families didn't get a lot of tax cuts from rate rollbacks, "marriage deduction" adjustments, and the dividend tax cut. But no, the GOP is demanding that in order to restore the roughly $3.5 billion for tax credits for the working poor, the Dems must agree to spend double that amount on these wealthier folks. Instead, they should practice real opposition politics by screaming about the problem. Let the Republicans fix their own mess if they have the votes for it. (Apparently, Trent Lott made a gagging gesture while voting for the fix; it apparently pains him to let the poor have tax breaks too). The more you pay the more you are expected to pay? Give me a break. Wouldn't we all like to make at least $100K; not feasible. However, I for one do not resent the fact that they get back more because they pay more. I don't understand the liberal way of thinking...it is all Robinhood and let's take care of everyone; heaven forbid they should do for themselves. Sharon wilson Posted by: sharon wilson at June 13, 2003 03:00 PM Never mind Sharon that most of the "working poor" don't pay any income taxes at all, not ONE CENT, with the upper 50% paying 96% of income taxes (this doesn't include taxes that only high-income individuals pay, such as luxury taxes). You understand liberals just fine - juice the productive few to pay for the unproductive many. Posted by: Dominick at December 20, 2003 12:04 PM Now let me let you all in on a little secret. Not all of us can be fairly grouped into the "unproductive many." Some of us, me in particular, get every unfair situation in life thrown at us possible, and have to struggle against the odds. I have had long bouts of sickness, a loss of income(laid-off), loss of a good babysitter, car probllems that resulted in a cracked engine block, and you name it, it's happened. ALL WHILE TRYING VERY HARD TO KEEP GOING TO COLLEGE. Alot of those of you out there who have never had to go through an abusive relationship, have to move out and start all over because of it, and start with NOTHING,-no car- no where to go- and have a 1-yr-old mind you- will never know what it is to be "unused" -To be a very productive worker, but be UNABLE to get a job, because there is no money for a car to get back and forth to work with, there's no-one to watch your child when you do have a way to get there and because all you have to survive on, is what you can scrape together from selling your own personal belongings to friends.
