Why MoveOn matters

Forget the result of the primary voting, likely to be distorted by attempts to jimmy the results. But you can only be impressed with these numbers:

According to figures released by the group, more than 40,000 voters so far have pledged to volunteer to work on a Democratic presidential campaign and more than 35,000 have promised to contribute to a Democratic candidate.
"We are thrilled to learn that people are participating beyond just voting in the primary," Zack Exley, organizing director or MoveOn.org's political action committee, said in a statement.

If even a fraction of those volunteers get into the streets now going door-to-door and on the phone, they can recruit tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands more by the general election.

Forget the television media. This is an election that will be won or lost on the oldest media in the country, the back fence and the workplace break room. And if Democratic volunteers can be deployed to gin that one-on-one communication system with the facts of Bush's lies and economic mismanagement, this election will be a cakewalk for the eventual Democratic nominee.
