<< Bush- Sinking in Polls | Main | 39% of Britain: Tony Should Resign >> July 20, 2003Rightwing Censorship AmokThe Los Angeles Times published this cartoon yesterday: The cartoonist is a conservative and the message is about Bush's supposed victimization at the hands of politics, but over at FreeRepublic, the rabid censors took one look at it and the fact is was at the LA Times and began a discussion where people were trying to trump each other on censoring the papter. Some comments: Bastards! The Los Angeles Times should be shut down! The first amendment does not include threats and or harrassment. Shut it down with a boycott! when the LA Times gets burned to the ground no one will wonder why Only after the endless line of censorship comments had gone for a while did a participant point out: Based on the reactions I have seen here and in a few duplicate threads, there are many, many dolts here. It took me a while to figure out Ramirez' message (it helps that I know he is a very strong conservative -- probably the only one at the LAT).It's kind of sick that the Freepers worship Ann Coulter and her recent ode to McCarthyism, but the very fact that they rushed to call for censorship of a fellow conservative because they were too stupid to even think about what he meant-- well, that is about the best case for free speech possible. It's not just that everyone deserves the right to speak, but a lot of folks are too lazy to even make sure they are shutting down speech they actually disagree with. One thing I'm wondering, Nathan, given the frequency with which you post gleanings from Freerepublic, is how the hell can you stand to read that site as often as you must? We already have a Chip Berlet, so give yourself a break ;-) Posted by: Barry Freed at July 21, 2003 12:03 AM You're stronger than I am, Nathan. Posted by: Al-Muhajabah at July 21, 2003 12:44 AM As someone who reads the L.A. Times daily, I know that the cartoonist Ramirez is a frothing mad dog neo-con. I can't believe that any righty would mis-interpret Ramirez. It seems pretty obvious. Posted by: Tin Soldier at July 21, 2003 10:48 AM Imagine (if any of us can stand to) that you're a Freeper. This cartoonist is writing for the LA Times, he's got a Latin name, and he isn't portraying Bush as our Lord and Saviour. What'd be the likelihood that he's a conservative in your vile little Freeper universe? Mind you, I can understand. Cartoonists are creative people, so the chances of one being conservative seem small. And the Freaps don't take the time to think about anything at all, let alone work out the meaning of a cartoon that isn't captioned. Posted by: Tim at July 21, 2003 10:38 PM Perhaps there's a wider point here too. Reading the start of the Free Republic thread, I get the impression many people had no idea of the intended reference (to the famous photo). Within minutes someone had posted the photo, and shortly afterwards someone explained what it depicted, but even then most folks didn't seem to understand or grasp what the cartoonist was trying to say. Posted by: Dan at July 22, 2003 12:40 AM Reading that Freeper thread was delightfully self-reaffirming. It's good to be a liberal! (And regardless of the message, that was a damn powerful political cartoon. Too bad idiots sicced the SS on Ramirez...) Posted by: Kenneth G. Cavness at July 22, 2003 11:26 AM having had to do history reports on Vietnam in high school, when i first saw this cartoon yesterday, my first thought was, "wow, is that what he thinks." then i thought that 98% of the folks who see this won't get it. but i had no idea that said folks were dense enough to still not get it after being shown the original photo. i don't know if i should be hopeful or terrified about that. Posted by: DesertJo at July 22, 2003 05:53 PM I'd like to point out that your interpretation of this cartoon, especially if you know the background story, will also depend on your judgement about the events in the photo. People on the liberal side, who were probably mostly opposed to the Vietnam war and are very critical of the atrocities comitted by Americans and South Vietnamese forces, will find the summary execution of an accused communist spy despicable. Thus, to them it looks like a pro-Bush cartoon. If you are of the opinion that the commie spy had it coming and is just getting what he deserves, and all communists should be shot anyway, and there's nothing wrong with a police chief executing somebody in a war who's workinng for the enemy, and what's the fuss about the execution in the picture - - well, I guess then the cartoon takes on a certain anti-Bush meaning, doesn't it? This argument can actually be made without the historical reference: If you think that shooting prisoners summarily is always wrong, you feel pity for the victim, and this cartoon takes on a pro-Bush meaning. If you think that for certain people (terrorists...) this is an acceptable fate, you don't see it that way, and only see the hostile act. The difference is the lack of emphathy for the victim. But then again, maybe I'm giving some people too much credit for thinking here. Posted by: Raven at July 22, 2003 08:29 PM On while will ownthen...." incest brother sister.
