Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsWhile I agree at the misuse of zoning and use of other means to insulate communities from demographic change, I think there are serious problems with how we spend our educational money that need to be dealt with. Living in a state (Wisconsin) that funds K-12 education in large part from general revenues, I can tell you that it's no panacea for either rising property taxes or educational quality. Not to say we don't do well overall, but for the money that's spent on education we're getting less bang for the buck than we did 20 years ago. If the Democrats want to raise a good issue, they might challenge Bush's 'Leave No Child Behind' feel-good policy with proposals to reduce the number of unfunded federal mandates which cost both the states and local government dearly. Posted by: Luke Francl at August 13, 2003 12:09 PM Damn it. My comment above should read: Considering your "although" would also solve a number of other problems without the intense side effects of banning zoning, don't you think that would be a better solution? Zoning can be misused. Suburban Nation (highly recommended) shows how zoning is used in suburbs to segregate communities by income, and actually prevents building old-style neighborhoods by making it illegal. But Suburban Nation also shows how rewriting zoning laws makes them a positive force to fight against suburban sprawl. Posted by: Luke Francl at August 13, 2003 12:12 PM Houston essentially lacks any zoning regulations. I've neither studied Houston, not lived there. Does Houston provide evidence that zoning hurts, or helps? Or both? Posted by: Tim Francis-Wright at August 14, 2003 10:07 AM "...zoning should be banned."
