<< TX "Polluters & Predators Protection Act" | Main | Employer Health Coverage Plummets >> September 18, 2003"States Rights" Threaten SecurityOur cities are threatened with bombs and other terrorist attacks. So what does the GOP do? They give them no money to enhance security. Instead, they give counterterrorism money to often rural and suburban dominated statehouses who choose not to spend any of it on enhancing city security. A new study shows that 90 percent of cities did not receive ANY of the $1.5 billion federal fund approved this year to help local emergency workers prepare for a terrorist strike and other disasters Here's the kicker-- after all the hoohah, New York City, site of a terrorist attack that did an estimated $100 billion in damage to the city's infrastructure and economy has received a grand total of... ...just $35 million in extra antiterrorism money. There is a bigger lesson here. All this talk of block grants to states-- it's not about "local control." It's about diverting federal funds from urban communites to rural and suburban Republican districts via statehouses who can quietly rip off urban communities, even at the expense of endangering their lives. NO MORE BLOCK GRANTS! DEMAND DIRECT AID FOR CITIES! As additional post here on how block grants are part of the conservative strategy to use deficits to cut social spending. And thanks to the new DNC Blog- Kicking Ass for linking here. Posted by Nathan at September 18, 2003 07:13 AM Related posts:

I guess, if the common rabble have vouchers, not education; Ahnnold, not advocacy; entertainment, not thought; religion, not ethics; fat, not fit; well, are disadvantaged, then they won't think to question the 'leadership' of Bush the Lesser, and vote the rascals out. I am worried about the Ethics and Ideals we were taught we believed in at all costs. Did it start before Teddy Roosevelt stole Hawaii? Posted by: Piet Van Allen at September 18, 2003 08:05 PM I live near Niagara Falls which certainly could be a target. The border is so porous that a young autistic boy walked across the border from Canada and eneded up in Niagara Falls NY. Posted by: Helen Dalley at September 18, 2003 09:57 PM It seems to me hat Bush nominates such incredibly rightist candidates for the federal bench to insure that they will be rejeced by the Democrats. This way he can tell the public that the Democrats are obstructing justice. Another hypocritical tactic. Posted by: William R. Bunge at September 18, 2003 10:00 PM Since a recall of a governor is certainly possible for no reason whatsoever, could the recall of the governor of Texas be possible? He and his Republican gang are attempting to redistrict so that no Democrat can ever again be elected. Today the Republicans in the State Senate placed the Democrats on probation. PROBATION! Posted by: Charles Van Scoy at September 18, 2003 10:56 PM I agree, why can't we recall the governor of Texas? Our schools had to implement "Bushies" no child left behind programs and they did. Now the state is not funding the programs and SO MANY of the schools are almost bankrupt! In our region - if the schools do not pull out - the state will take over, close down some of our schools and combine them. In the meantime, Perry & his Posse are spending money right & left by calling special sessions and chasing our Democrats around like "keystone cops" so they can redistrict now instead of 2011. Get over it! - give the money to the schools. Posted by: Terry Brooks at September 19, 2003 05:47 AM It's common sence. THEY READ TV GUIDE AND HOUSE AND GARDEN MAGAZINE WHILE THEY'RE WAITING TO PICK THE KIDS UP FROM DANCE AND KARATE...SIGNED FED-UP AND DISGUSTED!!! Posted by: Phyllis Coelho at September 19, 2003 09:32 AM This is definitely a scary development in the short term, but not surprising. In the long-run it will backfire on Bush though. First, the idea that any part of suburban or rural America will be target of a major terrorist attack is pretty silly. Look at the targets in the past, they are not targets to kill people (although that was not a concern) they were targets with huge symbolic value. It is only the fear mongering of the Bush White House that leads people in most of the nation to be afraid of terrorism. Let's face it, your local mall is a more likely target of domestic terrorism than any threat from Al Quaeda. Now, directing money to these relatively safe areas is couter-productive for several reasons. First is that it will not make people feel safe, and eventually they will expect that from the President and his war on terror. Seeing an armed guard does not make people feel safer. If, god for bid, there is another attack all of this direction of funding will be questioned. Finally, Cities are where our nation's power and strength lies. If Bush continues to isolate these areas he will find that winning national elections in the future will be much more difficult without some level of (at least financial) support from urbanites. But in the short term it is still damn scary that politics is allowed to enter into these decisions and protecting our nation is not the highest priority. Posted by: Rich at September 19, 2003 09:39 AM Suggestions for Dem. candidates: Posted by: Bret Harold Hart at September 19, 2003 10:11 AM AT what point is the American public going to pressure GWB to make a speech or address somewhere other than at a (cheering) military or para-military installation? His location choices are deliberate and safe. If GWB spoke in Oakland, CA; Boston, MA; NYC; or even down here in rural NC, he'd be wiping eggs and tomatoes off his mug. Let's see ol' 'swivel-hips' face something more homogeneous and representative of who his constituents truly are. The coward. Posted by: Bret Harold Hart at September 19, 2003 10:15 AM I have some interesting news! Posted by: Minnie McGowen at September 19, 2003 11:19 AM I think it would be fascinating to have this Bush family audited by someone other than his cronies in NYSE and FORBES. I wonder what we would find? Posted by: Susan Arthur at September 19, 2003 01:14 PM all of this is very interesting, but i think we miss the point. this administration is sapping our civil liberties one at a time. they currently propose doing away with subpoenas before searches or seizures of property, thereby effectively neutering the judiciary branches. they can hold anyone "suspicious" for up to 90 days without charges-- who is "suspicious" and who decides if it is you or I?? will you be considered "suspicious" tomorrow?? all of you old enough to remember Hitler's rise to power in Germany should be able to draw some similarities between how this government is handling crises and how Hitler solved what he considered his "threat to security"!! let's all keep our ears and eyes open!! Posted by: sharon at September 19, 2003 04:29 PM It is vital to our country that we do everything within our rights to be sure bush is not re-selected. (I won't say elected since he never was.) Bush's right-wing, frightening policies threaten our very freedoms that he claims, in his prepackaged speeches, to stand for. He, and his cohorts are nothing but lying fanatics. We, as Democrats, must be sure to unite. Our candidates must blast the administration, then state their plans.....they must not blast each other. Lieberman should keep his mouth shut when it comes to Dean or any other Democrat. Whoever comes out on top needs the total support of all of us. Any one of the 10 is better than Bush. In my opinion, Wesley Clark, is my number one choice. He has charisma, intelligence and respect. I support him wholeheartedly, but if anyone else wins our nomination, I will support them 100%, too. We all have to do so. Stand together Democrats. At this time in our history it is more important than ever! Posted by: Sharon at September 19, 2003 08:02 PM Why aren't the democrats demanding answers and explanations to this president's lies and action, just like the Republicans did with Clinton in the White Water scandal and Monica. Apparently they have also been too scare to act and defend the American public from this type of leadership. I believe that is one of the reasons they are in the position they're in to keep check and balance in this situations. I, as a citizen and a Democrat want to see my representatives in action and respresent me and the millions that have voted for them. Otherwise we run the risk of having Bush for another four years and ruining our beautiful country. Bin Laden and Sadam are only the scape goat Bush is using to get away with anything he wants and we're letting him. Posted by: John Alcides at September 20, 2003 12:42 AM The 11th of September Terrorist Attack - won't be forgotten - never! I visited the site. Have no words to describe my feelings. I hope something like that will never happen again. On the other hand after some time, one should stop and think about the misusing the accident to redirect the general development of the States policy towards becoming not a super power but a super boasting and arrogant BOSS trying to make everybody in the World believe that American i.e. American leaders' justice to be the only one, the only truth. How much and to what extent media have fallen into a present leadership policy trap, one can not guess but be sure that it has happened. Finally, I believe it is the time to wake up - and regain the American values, spacially those of FREEDOM and JUSTICE, citizen rights that have inspired many, many free thinkers all around the World through decades. One of them is myself - a Montenegrin, Radoslav Milosevic-Atos, from Montenegro, Balkans, Europe. Posted by: Radoslav Milosevic-Atos at September 20, 2003 01:52 PM Radoslav, I agree completely with your focus on world politics. The terror threats aren't going to be solved with "homeland security", and I use the term loosely, terrorist activity will only be deminished by changing world opinion of the United States. The message of freedom from the United States should be a beacon of hope to the rest of the world. Gunboat diplomacy has never worked in the past and will not work now. The message we are sending to rest of the is make your country look like the US or we will invade and force you to. And I ask, how can you force "freedom" upon another country? Posted by: James at September 20, 2003 02:52 PM The biggest question is when are we going to get Posted by: Jeane Morris at September 20, 2003 03:05 PM When George Bush I brought up a thousand points of light and a new world order during his term as president his meaning now has become clear to all of us during his son's presidency. The thousand points of light were the thousand campaign contributors who were to be rewarded with a payback with his son's selection as President. This payback primarily goes to conservatives who fund the right wing agenda to ensure the continuous domination of the Republican Party in American politics. The conservative agenda has only one focus--money! They realize that this commodity yields ultimate power in our neo-capitalistic dominated 'democracy'. Unfortunately, the Democrats are still grappling with this concept! This power base has as its roots, the media. Since most Americans are disinterested, uninvolved, uninformed, ignorant, or simply plain stupid, the media fills the vacuum of an insipid mind. Naturally, since the Republicans raise twice as much money (for the obsequiously conservative media) as the Democrats we can obviously conclude that the so-called 'liberal media' is a complete myth. Fact! We've been too fat, dumb, and happy to foment a revolution in this country. Sitting on our hands along with the rest of our sagging behinds, we've allowed the Republican Pit Bulls to take charge. When will we wake up? Do we want to find ourselves reliving the French Revolution in 1789 where the 'democrats' finally lopped of the heads of their 'republicans'? We shouldn't let it go that far. There are things that we can do now. We cannot allow Colin Powell's son to change the FCC rules and allow Rupert Murdoch and his radical right wing minions take advantage of the voiceless! If we do not act now the media will re-select Bush for a second term! These are just a few of Bush I thousand points of light! And now his new world order--world domination! It begins with Iraq and ends with every other country ready to defy George II. We have just begun a world tyranny, being the strongest, most paranoic nation on earth. Either we are bystanders in this maneuver or we are complicitors. In the end we will be the victims of our own ploy and the sad part is that most of us will not even know how it came about. Now, get involved, spread the word, keep this from giving us severe unintended consequences that will surely lead us to destruction. Posted by: James Cook at September 21, 2003 12:44 AM we need to understand that what happened on 9-11 wasn't an accident. it was developed by people who had been previously attacked by this country. does anyone honestly believe that the children who are being orphaned every day in iraq - even those on "our side", like the dead police officers, and everywhere else we are killing people, -at least the children who live to grow up - aren't going to seek revenge. do they not see it as their duty to do so? when people see no hope and see a great evil, don't they see it as their responsibility to act? do we believe that the children of iraq-the-first didn't grow up and act? Posted by: mim groff at September 21, 2003 10:26 AM now, shall we fall into bush's trap and fear the others? or shall we realize that our role in the world is not the "bad cop"?? Posted by: mim groff at September 21, 2003 10:32 AM I read all the postings and sit and shake my head yes. But as the old saying goes, we are all just "preaching to the choir". If you are here, you are fed up and wanting a change. But posting here is getting us nowhere. Sitting at home and reading Democrats.com or Truthout.org or any of the other sites that just fuel our anger and want for change, does nothing to really help the situation. But then one must ask.. what CAN we do? We are basically helpless, other than protests, which are ignored. We here all know that Bush and Co. are working toward the NWO. We here all know that this has been in the works for a very long time. Most of us here have read the book by Jim Marrs called "Rule by Secrecy". We KNOW what's happening.. but what do we do about it? Vote in the next election? That did a lot of good in the last one, didn't it? And now with the "new and improved" way of voting we stand even less of a chance of getting Bush out of office. Just by writing this post, I could be arrested without a warrent and held without counsel for as long as the administration is in power. I could rot in jail and no one would know where I was or why I was there. There would be no one to help me. My daughter would become a ward of the state. My possessions would become State property. What a nice thought. People are scared and with good reason. Have the militia been right all along? Is there eventually going to be an uprising of the common man? How does one get granny to stop listening to the media that she trusts and see the truth? How do we reach the masses that need to be reached? How do we wake up the rest of America? And is it possible to do so before it's too late? People who DO stand up and come forward are being arrested and some are ending up dead in mysterious ways. Sometimes I want to stand on the street corners and yell out my frustration. But that would only fuel the right winger's accusations of us being the ones who are crazy. So how do we reach mass America? How do we open their eyes? Or can we? Posted by: Pauline Collins at September 21, 2003 11:34 AM Post a comment
