<< Arnie- Lifestyles of Tax Avoiders | Main | Ken Lay et al Liable to Former Employees >> October 03, 2003Public Slams Bush on EconomyIn the new NYT/CBS Poll, the plunge in approval for Bush on the economy is astounding. (You'll have to go to the linked full poll results). Only 37% approve of Bush on the economy Forget the headline on overall approval of Bush (down to 51%)-- I've always said that approval on the economy is the key to election. And Bush is registering numbers in the depths it's hard to remember. Some conservatives are trying to comfort themselves by noting that Clinton had lower overall approval ratings as Bush at this point in 1995-- but his approval on the economy was never this low. And 60% think Bush's policies favor the rich, only 10% believe they favor the middle class. And here's the kicker killer question for Bush: 62. Do you think the policies of the Bush Administration have increased the number of jobs in the United States, decreased the number of jobs, or have the policies of the Bush Administration not affected the number of jobs in the U.S.?Over half the country thinks Bush is responsible for all the lost jobs in the economy. He's toast. Butter him. p.p.s. And 68% think the United Nations should have the lead in setting up the government in Iraq; only 26% think the US should do it. p.p.p.s. And 39% still don't think Bush legitimately won the 2000 election. Posted by Nathan at October 3, 2003 12:11 AM Related posts:

Just as I bet on Bush to lose in July of 2002 when the polls were all with Bush (although his approval on the economy was still not great). When I say toast, I'm pretty damn sure the bread is in the oven. Posted by: Nathan Newman at October 3, 2003 01:38 PM What's really amazing is if you look at the demographics of this poll - 50% of those surveyed voted for Bush (v. 39% for Gore). If a significant chunk of his supporters aren't happy with him, you're right, he's toast. Posted by: MB at October 3, 2003 02:49 PM The 39% who don't think Bush legitimately won in 2000 is a key figure, I think, because it represents a large number of people who are pissed off about what they perceive as being cheated into suffering under a government that has been a miserable failure, in Gephart's phrase. These people will do more than just vote against Bush; they'll contribute money, volunteer their time, and hit the streets to get others to turn out. A lot of folks who thought Gore was the lesser of two evils are going into 2004 with a much different mindset; they think Bush is on a whole other order of evil, and there's not going to be nearly as much ambivalence about getting behind the Democratic nominee, whoever he may be.
