<< On Productivity and Trade | Main | Join the Labor Movement- TODAY >> October 26, 2003Unions and Mobilization 2004It's hard to emphasize the qualitative jump in mobilization by unions planned for the election this election cycle. But this story on the plans of Service Employees International Union 1999 -- the New York state health care union -- gives you some idea. With New York a likely Dem win, what are New York state unionists going to do? Ship 1000 activists out of state to the swing states: As part of the anti-Bush campaign, union President Dennis Rivera has recruited 1,000 rank-and-file members and staff to fan out across the country beginning next month to get an early start organizing get-out-the-vote operations in more than a dozen "battleground" states. That's a full year before the election. Most of the time, unions have only gotten active in their own core states a few months before the election-- so getting activists in place in other states so early is a quantum jump in mobilization. And the union is focusing on raising the funds to make this work-- reportedly aiming to raise $35 to $40 million from state union members. Posted by Nathan at October 26, 2003 09:27 AM Related posts:

Posted by: Nathan at October 26, 2003 02:27 PM Good idea, but it's more ammunition for the Republican union haters and their claims of political use of members' dues; one assumes the SEIU recognizes the charge will be leveled at it. Posted by: Linkmeister at October 27, 2003 01:31 AM Read the story-- the money being raised is voluntary from members-- "Nearly half of them [members]contribute to the union's political fund through a special monthly voluntary dues checkoff." The union does spend dues money on general education on political issues and get-out-the-vote, but the hard-core politicking is paid for by the voluntary money. Posted by: Nathan at October 27, 2003 06:54 AM The union as a whole, not just District 1199NY (not 1999), wants to put 2000 members into swing states, for varying lengths of time. I'd just note that facts haven't stopped the rhetoric from those people before, nor has the media been particularly interested in anything remotely resembling accounting from separate funds, so... On that second point, I think Acctg 201A & 201B should be major requirements for J-school.
