This adds to the 37 other class-action lawsuits against Wal-Mart with similar types of claims. The evidence in this case comes from Wal-Mart's own time cards where internal auditors records reveal the illegal activity -- they said in internal memos, "Wal-Mart may face several adverse consequences as a result of staffing and scheduling not being prepared appropriately." In Minnesota alone, the estimate is that Wal-Mart deliberately stole $200 million from employees, including falsely editing time cards to do so. Kids go away to jail for decades for stealing a pizza. They could pay these people and still make obscene amounts of money, but I guess that extra billion on the bottom line is just to hard to pass up. Posted by: SteveC at November 10, 2003 11:24 AM I think it was Michael Moore who did a mockup version of "COPS" in which they went after corporate criminals they way they go after street thugs: Busting down doors, throwing then to the ground, and manhandling them into the paddy wagons. It was beautiful. Equally absurd to Republicans claiming to be the party of "fiscal discipline" is them claiming to be the party of law and order. I'm with Nathan on this one: let's throw 'em in prison, and not one of those country club ones either. Posted by: Kevin Block-Schwenk at November 10, 2003 05:08 PM I have been following this for a while, with interest, since I have a part-time job in a Wal-Mart garden center. The good thing is that the management people leave me alone and I work an abbreviated schedule of my own choosing. I have never seen any pressure to work off the clock, but I did make a time card mistake once, with repercussions. I failed to clock out one day and came up a day short on my next check. No one in the personnel office was questioning why I had clocked in, but not out so I just wasn't paid for that day until I forced the point. We also had an east european cleaning crew for a long time, but their contract expired and was not renewed long before the latest news broke. I never got to know any of these people, other than exchanging greetings, so I have no idea how much they were paid, but they worked 364 days a year with their only day off being Christmas Day. They were not allowed any benefits, and if they were too sick to work, even for one day, they were immediately sent back to their native country. I am amazed by the power wielded by Wal-Mart, both economically and politically! Posted by: Fred at November 10, 2003 07:23 PM Can I point you this rather cruel story here . The implication being that Wal-mart is laying off workers, then inviting them to reapply for the same jobs, so that they won't have to pay them Christmas bonuses..... Posted by: Mark at November 12, 2003 04:49 PM Wal-Mart needs to get rid of the greeters at the front door. Im talking about the greeters who don't say a word to you as you walk in.
