However, to the extent that there is a tilt, the answer is pretty simple, as Jesse at Pandagon notes: those who enter in the public sector tend to rank material acquisition as a lower priority, a value hierarchy consistent with liberal ideals. The flip side of this would be conservatives entering the private sector, as material wealth is more highly regarded within their value system and the public sector is a terrible route through which to acquire it.Or, to put in more bluntly, smart conservatives go into business, so you end up with a lot of dumb conservatives competing against very smart liberals for academic jobs. Which is why those dumb conservative academics are not smart enough to observe this very problem. BTW the same dynamic effects the journalistic profession, which is very low-paid for the training demanded. Unfortunately, I don't have a better explanation, but I don't think materialism/non-materialism is the answer. In my experience, professors care more than anything else about their reputations. That pursuit always seemed rather shallow to me. I'm not sure how many of them are in it for the pursuit of "liberal ideals." And as for the "economics departments are generally conservative," that's simply not true. Of the economists in my department that wear their politics on their sleeves, they are all liberals. There may be conservative economists in this department, but I would have no way of knowing because they never speak up. Part of the problem here is that the US doesn't really have a public left wing that criticizes capitalism per se, so even ideological capitalists can be called "liberal" and thus "left." They do well compared to other professors AND they have good non-academic markets to sell themselves in. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think an econ phd is one of the few that's not a total waste of money if you don't become an academic at the end. Nick, I don't know if this is shocking to people or not, but I think on balance the liberal economists in this department support the capitalist system of allocating resources, and yet still think Bush is a buffoon and doing everything incorrectly. Even on economic matters (see Brad DeLong for criticisms of this type). While you're right that this doesn't make them Marxists or something similar, they're certainly not very conservative either in the politica sense. Posted by: zero the hero at February 12, 2004 06:57 AM I think a difference is that when you work daily with very smart people it becomes incredibly hard to defend the kind of rightwing double-talk that has been so pervasive in our public discourse (clear skies, fair and balanced, etc.). Although there are notable conservative institutions, departments, and programs littering academia, we should remember that recent surveys of students show that more undergrad males are conservative (fewer women), but that an overwhelming majority of grad students of both sexes were liberal. This I think rather bears out Nathan's original take, as what kind of capitalist would spend six years going into debt in order to get either no job or one that pays $35,000 and lands you in some town you never heard of in some state that was never mentioned in your family? Posted by: Lorca at February 16, 2004 03:53 AM extrapolating from the people that i know, graduate students who go into debt are those enrolled in professional schools like medicine and law (these are high paying professions). most other graduate students actually earn quite a bit more (through TAing, financial aid, fellowships, ect.) than their tuition. most of the graduate student that i know in the science make about $30,000/year on top of tuition which is not bad for a 25 yearold. also being a college professor is not a low paying job. a junior professor in the sciences at a good university will make about $60,000/year and a full professor in the social sciences at a not-so-good university will probably make about $70,000/year. all of these numbers are based on relatives and friends of mine. i don't know the actual statistics but i'm sure that the average professor makes more than the average worker and the average person with a graduate degree makes more than the average person with an undergraduate degree. The average starting salary of professors varies depending on the study, but is as low as 28K. I'd say it is around 36k. And due to the decimation of funding for education under Bush, the top jobs are being phased out in favor of cheap, young and untenured teachers, many of whom are not given benefits and are expected to teach full time. I know a community college that has had a salary-increase freeze in place for 14 years.
