<< Dean Loses It | Main | Saving the Mouse >> February 12, 2004Eating Your Own GarbageBush didn't lie. He just had faulty intelligence. And where did that faulty intelligence come from? Apparently from the Iraqi exiles who fed the intelligence services false information: In the aftermath of the occupation of Iraq and the apparent failure of the United States to find conclusive evidence of unconventional weapons in Iraq, the role of exile groups in providing prewar intelligence has come under increasing scrutiny...Since occupation of Iraq, many officials in the American intelligence community have said that much of the information provided to Washington by the Iraqi National Congress before the war was suspect, and some have questioned whether the group provided disinformation to the United States. A review of prewar information by the Defense Intelligence Agency has already concluded that much of the information it received from Iraqi defectors, including information provided by the I.N.C., was of little or no use.Kind of stupid to rely on overzealous exiles who hated Saddam enough to lie to the US government, but that absolves the Bush administration of running a disinformation campaign, right? Except the exile efforts were being funded by the US government with an aim to influencing public opinion. "Defectors, reports and raw intelligence are cultivated and analyzed," Entifadh Qanbar, then the director of the Iraqi National Congress's Washington office, wrote to the Senate Appropriations Committee staff. The memo, dated June 26, said "the results are reported through the I.N.C. newspaper (Al Mutamar), the Arabic and Western media and to appropriate governmental, nongovernmental and international agencies."...So the US government was funding these lies, pumping them into the US media, then using these lies to justify the war. This was hardly unbiased reliance on intelligence but a deliberate manipulation of public opinion on the public dime to promote the war with those lies. Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: Commentsi disagree that bush did not lie. if iraq had actually had wmd in usable condition bush would have never dared to attack iraq. the risks would have been to high. attacks by weapons of mass destruction could have been used against american troops causing politically unacceptable number of deaths. furthermore after the iraq's command and control infrastructure collpased (which happened almost immediately, much before US troops secured the country which arguably they still have not done) the wmd would have been in the hands low ranking officers who collectively would be very likely to either sell them to underground militant groups, use them against civillian targets e.g. attacking kuwait city or kurdish areas which could kill tens of thousand, misfiring them which could also kill tens of thousands or using them against US troops. if any of these things happened bush would be politically dead; he knows this which is why he will never attack a country like north korea or pakistan which have wmd in usable condition. it is likely that bush and company thought they would find a 12-year old chemical warhead in completely unusable condition which they could use to justify their claim but the wmd threat was a complete lie. also, i would argue that the main reason why bush the first did not take out saddam hussein in the first gulf war was that back then he actually did have usable wmd. Posted by: zero the hero at February 12, 2004 08:58 AM Zero- My irony indicator obviously was too subtle on this post. My point is that it's hard for Bush to claim to be a victim of bad intelligence when he and his administration were the ones pumping that bad information into his own government and into the media. Posted by: Nathan Newman at February 12, 2004 10:22 AM irony is not at all my thing let me just say this: bush was not a victim of bad intelligence. he had very good intelligence indicating that iraq did not have wmd. of course if bush had said "we are safe to attack iraq now because it no longer has wmd in usable condition" every country hostile to the united states would have doubled its efforts to get wmd. instead by saying "we are invading iraq because they have wmd" he scared ignorant countries like libya, syria and iran into scrap their programs. north korea which is a much more educated country than the above mentioned is the only one who saw through america's lie and did the opposite. Posted by: zero the hero at February 13, 2004 07:23 AM That can only mean that Clinton lied as well. After all he also attacked Iraq on the basis of their WMD. I can only guess that the Un of all entities lied, they claimed that Iraq had 40,000 liters of anthrax. Heavens no not the UN lying!! Did you know he is a Vietnam Veteran?
