Lantos supported both; polls show a strong majority of the voters in this western San Francisco and northern peninsula district oppose both.If you feel like tossing him some cash for the last push for the primary, check his website. And even Paul Wellstone voted for the Patriot Act. Posted by: Dan at February 18, 2004 09:39 PM Lantos is perfectly entitled to his own views; however, if his consituents have decided that he no longer represents their views, they should be able to vote him out if they want to. Posted by: Al-Muhajabah at February 19, 2004 07:45 AM Dan, Lantos is an old-fashioned, Cold War Hawk from Eastern Europe -- like Daniel Pipes and Zbigniew Brzezinski. Whatever his terrible experiences were in the Holocaust, his current foreign policy stances tend toward militarism and conquest. As far as his trustworthiness is concerned, he presided over the infamous "incubator" hearings about Iraqi behavior in Kuwait. His district historically has had lots of military manufacturing, so his hawkishness was popular back home, but a lot of those jobs left in the 90s and it's possible that the constituency is less concerned about the Pentagon as pork than they used to be.
