<< Bush Subverts Haiti Democracy | Main | The Problem with Nader >> March 01, 2004Buddy Ro Profiled in NATIONMy friend Ro has been giving Tom Lantos a challenge over his pro-war position and The Nation's John Nichols has a nice profile, comparing Ro to the wave of primary challenges back during the Vietnam War that elected people like Ron Dellums and Bella Abzug and Father Robert Drinan to office. As the article notes: Win or lose, however, [alternative weekly] Bay Guardian executive editor Tim Redmond says, "Khanna has done what you would hope a challenger would do. He has forced the incumbent to come home, to answer questions about his votes on issues like the war and the Patriot Act. This is exactly what primaries are for."And Ro has done a great service in holding Lantos accountable to those questions. Posted by Nathan at March 1, 2004 07:00 PM Related posts:

Posted by: cgs at March 3, 2004 01:02 AM Final results: Lantos 74%, Khana 20%. Disappointing. Posted by: cgs at March 3, 2004 03:51 PM SF Weekly exposed Khanna for the fraud that he is. He's a phony progressive, a guy who wants office. And Lantos isn't so bad, so this whole endeavor is a joke. Posted by: Fitzgerald K at March 4, 2004 08:20 PM Fitzgerald- The SF Weekly "profile" was a racist pack of lies drumming on his Indian ethnicity-- it attributed positions to Ro that he had explicitly rejected. Ro's labor platform was very good-- I should know, since I helped him formulate it. Without question, Ro is not as left as I am on labor issues, but he was strongly committed to real labor standards at both home and in international labor agreements. And he ran and forced Lantos to be accountable on his conservative foreign policy and civil liberties positions. Posted by: Nathan Newman at March 5, 2004 12:08 PM Post a comment
