March 03, 2005Scalia on TheocracyAs the Court debates whether governments can display the Ten Commandments on public property, Justice Scalia is getting more aggressive in telling us atheists we have no place in this country, noting that the Ten Commandments are "a symbol of the fact that government derives its authority from God." But at least Scalia is honest that the half-assed secular-sounding defenses of such displays as merely showing their historical influence on modern law are ridiculous. At oral arguments, Scalia argued: "You're watering it down to say the only message is a secular message," the justice said. "I can't agree with you. 'Our laws come from God.' If you don't believe it sends that message, you're kidding yourself."If we are going to have endorsement of theocracy in this country, I at least hope we could have Scalia's honesty about it.
