<< "Fast Track" to Unfair Trade | Main | Economics Trumps Religion in Israel >> May 20, 2002Strikes and OrganizingTwo union stories of especial interest to me at old employers. My first union job was as an organizer in Las Vegas back when the Hotel Workers (HERE) local was a large but struggling local of 25,000 workes facing a rapidly expanding industry. Through solidarity and smart organizing, the local has almost doubled in size in the last decade. In the wake of 911, the hotel union is facing new challenges and a new strike vote means the union may be facing off in the streets for the first time in almost 20 years to preserve its gains....One way HERE expanded was through card check agreements-- forcing employers to recognize the union when a majority of workers requests it, rather than waiting months or years to go through the nightmare Labor Board election process. Two summers ago, I worked at the Communication Workers of America (largely telephone company unions) where they were very successful in gaining such agreements. The results: nearly 4,000 workers at cellular-technology provider Cingular Wireless have joined the Communications Workers of America (CWA) in the last four months. .
