<< Liberalism versus Democracy | Main | Strikes and Organizing >> May 20, 2002"Fast Track" to Unfair TradeAs this article from last week highlights, Senate ignores veto threat on trade bill, keeps critical amendment alive (note I kind of like FreeRepublic article postings since they survive for a while and I find the commentary entertaining), there is a bruising battle in the Senate over "fast track" legislation to allow the President to negotiate trade treaties that would be unamendable by the Congress-- they'd have to vote it up or down, giving the President a "take it or leave it" power to define our trade strategy. The bill survived the House only with a one-vote margin on a largely partisan vote and, despite the GOP co-sponsor of the amendment that led Bush to threaten a veto, the votes in the Senate are also largely partisan. A series of votes have occurred on financially assisting workers who lose their jobs due to trade and promoting labor and environmental rights internationally-- all largely on partisan lines. See [more] for a breakdown on votes on the Dayton-Craig amendment- Roll Call -- Alphabetical by Senator Name VOTING NAY On Motion to Table (procedurally, Nay was the vote in favor of the amendment) Democrats Akaka (D-HI), Nay >Republicans Nay Democrats VOTING YEA Baucus (D-MT), Yea Republicans Voting Yea Allard (R-CO), Yea Posted by Nathan at May 20, 2002 11:47 AM Related posts:
