The price? Selling out the Kurds whose oppression by Hussein was supposedly one of the justifications for this war. See this article on a new agreement to allow Turkey to occupy Kurdish regions of Iraq to prevent any moves towards independence by the Kurds. But then, raising the hopes of the Kurds only to sell them out is nothing new for the Bush family. Dubya's Dad did it twice-- once back in the 1975 when he was head of the CIA and, of course, after the first Gulf War when the Kurds were encouraged to rebel, only to have the US step back and let them be slaughtered. More on history of US relations with the Kurds in this MSNBC article: In the 1970s, amid a territorial dispute between Iraq and neighboring Iran, the Kurds aligned themselves with Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi of Iran, who was backed by Washington. But when Baghdad and Tehran made peace over the disagreement, the United States cut off all support to the Kurds. The Iraqi army took revenge by killing thousands.So once again the Kurds can count on a Bush to make promises and leave them to be slaughtered and oppressed by another country. It is disheartening to read that the Bushies are pressing on with it. So how does Christopher Hitchens, who never fails to brag of his contacts among the Kurds, feel of this betrayal? Also, the Bushies are not alone in sticking it to the Kurds. Behind 70's-era cut off of support for the Kurds MSNBC mentions was none other than Henry Kissinger. Clinton provided diplomatic cover for Turkey, who slaughtered thousands of Kurds and left millions of refugees in the late 1990's. All was done with 80% U.S. weapons.
