<< More on California Recall | Main | What's Wrong with NAACP Command Performance? >> July 18, 2003Less Educated Saw Bust even in BoomThe jobless and wageless recovery started long ago for men with high school degrees. According to a new report Boom Times a Bust: Declining Employment Among Less-Educated Men, hourly wages (in constant dollars) for men in this age range dropped drastically from $ 10.47 in 1979 to $ 8.47 in 1989. Despite the economic boom of the 1990s, wages only increased marginally to $ 8.68 an hour from 1989 to 1999. Furthermore, employment rates for less-educated young men declined by 5 percentage points, from 83 percent to 78 percent, since the 1979 business cycle. The decline in employment was most severe among African American men, with employment between 1979 and 1999 dropping 13 percentage points, from 66% to 53%. At least part of the answer is the massive increase in imprisonment, where data indicated that African American men, particularly those with criminal records, have fewer job opportunities than other groups because of employer perceptions of criminal involvement. Not only does a criminal record reduce employment opportunities for all the ethnic groups because of discrimination, the study said, time spent in prison is time away from systems that lead to employment and career advancement, such as developing professional networks. (Some info from a BNA Daily Labor Report). There is a large chunk of the population, white and black, being completely left behind in the economy, not in the current recession, but over the last twenty years. Forget short-term stimulus-- we need long-term job creation aimed at this population. Posted by Nathan at July 18, 2003 10:17 AM Related posts:
Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsIf the anti-War movement had put as much effort into ending prohibition as it put into preventing the Iraq War it might have actually accomplished something. 70% to 80% of voting age Americans favor medical marijuana. That one is a no brainer. it is amazing that progressives are so inept thtat they can't even win with the public in their favor. Winning on medical marijuana would be a step towards ending the drug war. Once you crack the armor rationality can begin to take hold. Ending prohibition would go a long way towards ending the perverse incentives America has set up with it's drug war. Posted by: M. Simon at July 29, 2003 08:43 AM I love how or "free" country is set up through the eyes of 55 year old wealthy white men. I love how "they" justify that i can not smoke some marijuana but a 22 year old man can go to a bar drink 15 beers and smoke 12 cigarattes and im sure that isnt as bad as 1 marijuana cigaratte. This country is corrupt. People only know what they are told...is it right that the gov't is technologicaly advanced and "they" choose what we are capable of knowing. Our country's people live in fear everyday while eating dinner and watching the 5 o'clock news because all it shows is that a black man is going to rob and kill you. We have about 12,000 gun murders a year the closest country to that is at like 350. It's time to get our country out of the hands of old white men and diversify the gov't some. It's time to stop blowing tons and tons of moeny on a "world" issue. If the world is so much better when Saddam is out of power, which it is, then let the whole world financialy support this issue and let america provide the personel. 3 million american employees got pink slips because of our shitty economy not because they werent good workers, is that fair? Everyone do me a favor this year and do a little something for our environment...plant a Bush back in texas. Posted by: M. leone at May 16, 2004 12:13 PM Post a comment
