<< Why Does the GOP Hate Our Troops? | Main | Backlash on Gay Rights Decision >> July 28, 2003The Next VP?Democrats Nominate Richardson To Lead 2004 Convention Democratic Party leaders nominated New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to be chairman of their 2004 national convention on Monday, a move to appeal to Hispanic voters increasingly targeted by Republicans.Graham is an obvious pick for VP to nail down Florida, but Richardson is the other big contender. It would encourage a massive latino shift towards the Democrats in the election. And given Richardson's experience with North Korea, he is a solid pick for national security issues. What was it Lily Tomlin said about cynicism? No matter how cynical you get, it's impossible to keep up. For some interesting additional context you might want to google "Jim Bell" and "Assassination Politics" Posted by: Barry Freed at July 29, 2003 06:09 AM I agree. I think the presidential nominee will either be Dean, Kerry or Gephardt. For all of them, but possibly less so for Dean, Richardson would make a lot of sense. Graham would make a lot of sense for Dean or Kerry, but perhaps less so for Gephardt. But don't overlook the warm feelings Dean and Gephardt have for each other (Dean supported Gephardt in '88). A Dean-Gephardt or Gephardt-Dean ticket is not out of the question. Posted by: Paleo at July 29, 2003 03:41 PM I guarantee that Graham is the only white boy who has a chance at the VP slot-- getting Florida is compelling enough to override demands for diversity on the ticket. Otherwise, the VP will be Richardson or a female candidate like Diane Feinstein (which would make me unhappy, but is a real possibility). Posted by: Nathan at July 29, 2003 06:23 PM You guys are forgetting Wesley Clark. Of course, it is WAY to early to exclude Clark from the top spot. . . . Posted by: Jeff at July 29, 2003 10:22 PM "Aren't the majority of Latinos already in the Democratic camp?" Surprisingly and sadly enough, they aren't. It's bit ridiculous that a majority of Hispanics voted for Mayor Bloomberg of NYC. "While Democrat Al Gore beat Republican George W. Bush by a 2-1 margin among Hispanic voters in the 2000 U.S. presidential election..." It's pretty ridiculous considering Republican policies in no way help Hispanic Americans in fact, only make life harder for us and I really don't understand it myself.
