<< UAW: One More Parts Supplier Neutrality Pact | Main | Why the Jobless Recovery? >> October 17, 2003Union Members Voted Against ArnieDon't believe the hype. There was definitely slippage among union voters towards Arnie and the GOP, but if union members had decided the vote, Gray Davis would not have been recalled, and if he had, Cruz Bustamante would be governor. According to exit polls, union members voted decisively (55%) against the recall. And in the candidate ballot, union members voted 44% for Bustamante and only 37% for Arnold. Some other fun facts from the recall-- this was a straight up vote of wealthier Californians voting Yes on the Recall, while lower-income folks voted a big No. Only Californians making $50,000 a year or more voted for the recall-- those making more than $75,000 per year voting even more strongly in favor. And Bustamante beat Arnie among voters making $15,000 to $50,000 per year. No doubt Arnie's social liberalism picked off a bunch of upper-income Democrats, but don't believe any propaganda coming out of the media that the coming assault on unions and the poor was agreed to by those voters. Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsI'm not sure that you can say that unions or those making between 15k-50k voted "decisively" against the recall. This was Davis' core constituency and he should have had a commanding lead in these groups. However, union members weren't able to convince their households to vote against the recall (Households were only 51% no). Also the 15k-50k earners were only against by either 54% or 51%, again a group that Davis should have gotten much more support from. Posted by: Manish at October 17, 2003 01:50 PM So 55% against is decisive? Sorry I'm not buying. These people have only themselves to blame when ahnie screws 'em. You posted the other day about Davis screwing the base, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have screwed the union members like gropenator is. Posted by: SteveC at October 17, 2003 02:11 PM Of course Arnie will be worse-- but 37% for Arnie by union members is about par for the course. I wish all union folks voted their union, not their abortion or gun beliefs, but you don't get all of them. And despite the hype, Arnie didn't get probably any higher a percentage of the union vote than Simon did last fall. Posted by: Nathan Newman at October 17, 2003 03:20 PM Keep the good work.
