Catholics- the 2004 Swing Vote?

Not a lot has been written about the ethnic and religious politics of the race this year-- at heart it's hard to see Bush and Kerry as anything other than white Yale boys-- but Kerry does have both the Catholic and Jewish thing going for him, as this article notes.

And Catholicism could end up being a key swing group, both moving ethnic whites in Midwest cities and Catholic latinos in the southwest and Florida.

Polls show that the political divide is less between religions than between super-observant religious folks (who trend Republican) and less church-going folks of all religions (who trend Democratic), but that's usually in general political trends or in races where two Protestants ran against each other.

So we may see Kerry's Catholicism picking off some "Reagan Democrat" types that even Bill Clinton couldn't touch.
