The Descent of a Man

A great tribute to Steven Jay Gould whose life was one of both science and passion, a man who was committed to understanding evolution and challenging the racist views of those who would use evolutionary theory to justify present day oppression and inequality. A scientist, a writer, a man who will be sorely missed on this earth.

Gould should also be remembered for his enthusiastic debunking of "'scientific' creationism," a.k.a. Cretin, I mean Creation, Science. While I realize such fools are a very peripheral thing in places such as New York, but you may remember here in Kansas they actually got a plurality on our elected State Board of Education. They tried to get evolution ommitted from the curricula of the local school boards. Nice way around the Establishment Clause, huh? My faith in having any such office subject to the popular vote was sorely challenged by such a happening. Luckily, at the next election, the state GOP rectified the problem in the primaries.

At any rate, Gould came to Kansas during this controversy and was elegantly scathing to the Bible thumpers. The spirit of Elmer Gantry lives! The ominous thing is when the spirit of Savonarola may show up. Gould was a champion of honest science and will be sorely missed.
