Two Cheers for Honda

Back in the 70s, US auto companies steadfastly resisted safety innovations until belatedly forced to install them by the government. Same thing with fuel economy during the 70s oil crisis.
...And by the time the Big Three dealt with the problem, they found that the Japanese auto companies were far ahead on innovation and lost market share.
...Well, it looks like Honda is single-handedly looking to repeat that performance as pressure for strengthening fuel economy standards builds.

Alone among auto companies, Honda is pushing better fuel economy standards. Honda is the only major automaker that has not joined the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the industry trade group that has led the fight against tougher fuel and emissions standards.
...Not coincidentally, Honda's cars are the most fuel efficient in the industry, a full 6 miles per gallon better than the average US company.
