Add in a crash of Windows on my old backup computer and this has been a banner day for me cursing the Bill Gates to the wall-- don't get me going on the authentication systems for Windows 98 that I've been dealing with-- it just makes me so excited to deal with the XP reinstalls in the future. I develop s/w in the Windows world for a living, and I am as frustrated with Windows and Microsoft as you are... but I have many Mac-using friends who have experienced crashes similar to your crash of Win98. There are no good operating systems... no, not even Linux. The only real safety in this world is to back up early and often. I do a full backup monthly, and carry a recent backup, on a ZIP disk in my pocket, of everything I truly can't bear to lose. Do not put your trust in any computer or operating system!
