Pictures Hackers Don't Want You to See

Al Jazeera's website was hacked and blocked today to prevent people from people able to see the pictures of civilian casualties due to US bombing in Iraq.

Here is one archive of images of US-funded death. A sampling of the images being seen around the world, feeding hate for America to a whole new generation across the world.

If we are killing innocent civilians (and we are), and we are refusing to let the US or the world see pictures of those killed civilians, you have to say there is something sick about that.
Horrible pictures, but I'm glad I've seen them.

Now, now, we must "keep our nerve," as Christopher Hitchens implored the other day. So some children get blown to bits -- isn't Halliburton worth it? Let's keep in mind the war's ultimate goal: the business of Iraq is business -- American big business.

I've noted the picture of the little girl myself, but I do want to make clear that she appears to be injured--horribly injured--not dead (Note that she appears to be holding up her right arm). I certainly hope she survives her wounds. I couldn't venture to guess the condition of the people belinging to the bare feet visible in the background.

Not that the picture is any less shocking. As I've said several times, as the father of two daughters, I get a little crazy when I imagine how I'd feel if I found them bloody and in agony like this poor girl. (Ther'es also a certain heartbreaking pathos in that frilly--and bloodstained--purple coat/robe/dress she's wearing...) Indeed, I'd venture that the famous photo of the Vietnamese girl fleeing the napalm attack was galvanizing due to her undeniable suffering.

Civilian deaths are an inevitable part of war, and a tragic but necessary toll of a just war, which this most certainly is not. I think it says much about the perception of American support for the war if it's judged to be likely to erode when confronted with these costs.

I think that the use of the photos like these, presented without any context, is simply propaganda, pure and simple. These pictures do not really inform the viewer of anything, they serve only to inflate the viewer's emotions. Where are the captions for these photos ( Fisk's site doesn't contain any, leaving the viewer to search for them)? How am I supposed to know what I am looking at? Were these Iraqis killed or wounded by U.S. or British bombs, or were they killed or wounded by falling Iraqi AAA flak, or by something else? I'm not making the argument that none of these pictures show Iraqi civilians killed or wounded by U.S. bombs, some of them probably show that, but how do I know that is the truth? How is this any different from the U.S. using photos of supposed Iraqi atrocities, or from using pictures of killed/wounded/captured American soldiers to their advantage?

Additionally, how does Nathan know that the purpose of the hackers was to prevent people form viewing the photos he posted ("Al Jazeera's website was hacked and blocked today to prevent people from people able to see the pictures of civilian casualties due to US bombing in Iraq.")? How does he know their motives? Does he know something he isn't telling us?

It seems to me that you are very quick to jump to conclusions. The news media now says that this terrible and nfortunate event was caused not by American bombs, but by Iraqi missiles which misfired. Althgough you are so anti Bush and anti war and anti government itself, it semms to me that you should have been a little more critical before you published these photos and blamed our military.

Gee, I wonder if Aljazeera ever broadcasts or posts images of totalitarian Arab regime-funded death?

Posted by: New World Odor at March 31, 2003 10:32 PM

Well you guys can have your doubts on Al Jazeera's motives or question who killed who.

However you are not seeing dead people on the news every night here in the States. We see a reporter saying that they say many dead on the road but you never get the pictures. All we see is a tank firing into the distance or a rifle man shooting at a target. Those rounds find a home. Lets be men and own up to what we started, lets see the aftermath.

I think going into a Baghdad hospital and showing the dead and wounded as they come in should be shown on the nightly news. If you want to show the dead from an Iraqi hit squad that is fine too. But lets own up that war is about violence and lets show it and let those images become our reality. We should be as disturbed by war as the soldiers coming back with all that death and destruction seered into their memories.

Its whats happening, lets see it.

Jared, I agree completely with what you say. Most Americans have no idea of what warfare is like (other than maybe watching movies like Saving Private Ryan or a series like Band of Brothers); they should see the havoc that war causes. However, even with that said, I still think that most graphic images will be used as propaganda by either side. They will be presented without any context or captions, without any supporting evidence to prove what they purport to show and will be used shamelessly by either side to support whatever arguement they seek to make. That, I think, is a shame.

Posted by: Joey Bushey at April 8, 2003 08:43 PM

War and death...you can't have one without the other...

"Oh it's horrible!" scream the anti-war activists.

Grow some balls, I say...

Oh yea...another thing...it's so obvious...the news groups don't show you those pictures for the simple fact that people DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM! Most people are squeamish and if they see such pictures on their television they are very likely to change the channel...not to mention if there are children in the same room as them...this reduces the ratings of the news station and causes them to loose money. It's not propoganda, it's generalizing your programming to target the largest group of people possible in order to churn out a profit. Sad...but that's how news programming works...

Sorry about the double post, but reading threw this I think Jared as a good idea...

A late night news program that targets the casaulties and the horror of the war...

Sounds like a possible solution to me...maybe we should petition a major broadcaster?

Posted by: Zealot at April 9, 2003 02:47 PM

Perfect example of propaganda in action here.

Posted by: Joey Bushey at April 10, 2003 06:47 PM

I am looking at these pictures after searching for quite some time on Google for any site that had pictures of iraqi casualties. Most sites that had been posting pictures have either been taken down or threatened with that if they did not remove their pictures.

It is probably true that these pictures are not being shown on the nightly news (although I seem to remember them during the Vietnam war) because it is a terrible thing to look at and people don't want to see them. It is also true that this war has support from a large number of American people precisely BECAUSE they are not being confronted with the realities as they go about their daily lives and are only hearing very sanitized versions of what it is like there. If we are funding the proliferation of these types of scenes (and the reality that those involved are not in this for just a "snap shot" of time but for the rest of their lives-if they are still alive) then we should be willing to look at the graphic results of the horrors we are inflicting on the people of Iraq. Only then can recruiters honestly do their job. Only then can those who support the war do so with clear intent. And only then can a true evaluation be made as to whether the professed (or hidden) goals are worth the cost both to our domestic economy and to the Iraqi people.

Peace
Fiora

Hi,
War is hell, Mr. Newman. People will die. Now that the war is coming to a close and the people of Iraq are free, they are starting to show great exuberance towards the troops. We freed them from a regime that did the same horrible things to his own people. -Respectfully
-Robert S. Morgan

The kurds were on the front lines of the Iran/Iraq war that started in 1980. Im looking for info on what kind of BOMBS Saddam used to do the same kind of damage that this and the 1991 war did to the children of Iraq. Kirkuk(OIL) is said to be the Jerusalem of the Kurds. But did Powell promise to get rid if the Kurds from Kirkuk? The LATE Chemical Ali was the one behind the '88 Kurdish deaths. But what other mass genocides did the Hussein regime commit? Thats what everyone needs to know. We need to know when the pro war people started caring about Iraqi's before 9/11. Would Bush be doing this now if it weren't for that? People get killed/oppressed all over the world.(See:Human rights watch) Iraq was no threat to the US. They cant find the WMD. They cant find Hussein. What was the reason for the invasion again? Because we REALLY need to know. Because from the history class Ive been taking(surfing the net), it seems Iraq is one really big can of worms.

HELEN: Why is it that people who know the least...know it the loudest?

ZALALM: For sake of argument...we'll destroy the oil feilds...and then what happens?? The Iraqi people will have absolutely no way of producing any kind of profit that will help its self got back on it's own feet...the nation will be reduced to a 3th world country over night...and all those little babies your so worried about will die from starvation...good thinking genious...

Rober S. Morgan: Right-on!

Susan: Why the war? Good lord...how many times to I have to explain this...I'll keep it short...the war in Iraq was PROVOKED! Saddam Hussein deliberately booted out the UN weapons inspectors because he knew that we would be forced to attack. In my oppinion we should have just finished him off in the 1980s but we decided to play humanitarian and accept a conditional cease fire. Don't forget Saddam WANTS the war...there are a hundred and one ways he can profit from this war even when he gets his ass kicked...

Its true that Sadddam was a war criminal, broke nearly all human rights rules, massaacared thousands, had Chemical and biological weapons (but doesn't know). These are all enough reasons for throwing Saddam of his power, but this does not give the US and Britain the right to invade Iraq, its against international law, and it will only provoke Muslim and Arab extremest to attack US people around the world, and hate them more. i would like to say that i am an Arab and muslim living in Bahrain, which is close to Iraq, and proud of it, and this war doesn't make me or the millions of arabs happy at all, it's like pouring fuel on an already raging fire. i would like to also say that in all possible Scenarios the Iraqi people will suffer. first scenario if there wasn't war saddam will still be ruling and the Iraqi people will suffer under his rule and the UN sanctions. second scenario the war, most of the casualties are civilians about 2 thousand. third scenario after the war, the new ruler (interim government) will be a us oicked leader, so that anything they want hiim to do he will do, he will will also not help out the iraqi people to economic development or growth, like Karzai in Afghanistan and all the Arab leaders. he will put his economy and people in a place were there is little developmenmt but the peole will live properly, so that Israel remains the top country in the region. in all situations the Iraqi people will suffer by far the most!!!! for the record i am not a muslim extremist and i don't believe in religion or god, but iam only muslim in name and have the same political beliefs as they do.
