<< No Progressive Policy w/o Labor | Main | Rumsfeld Lies Tying Iraq-Al Quaeda >> September 08, 2003Silliness of Dean-McGovern ComparisonOnce again, you have a major paper quoting people discussing the supposed comparison between Dean and McGovern. This is ludicrous. McGovern did not lose because he was too liberal. He lost because the party he was nominated for was hopelessly divided over the Vietnam War. And one of the notable facts about McGovern is that he is the only Democrat since before Roosevelt that the AFL-CIO did not endorse for the Presidency-- a critical factor in his crushing defeat. Whether Dean gets a labor endorsement in the primary, he will have the AFL-CIO endorsement for the general election if nominated and the most massive union mobilization on his behalf since Truman in 1948. If the GOP expects a McGovern-like campaign from Dean (or frankly any of the candidates), let them delude themselves. They'll be surprised when they get Truman's campaign instead. Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsI guess what annoys me so much about the Dean/McGovern comparisons is that people making it seem to be ignoring the underlying issue: were we really better off as a country electing Nixon? Are American's memories really that short that they've already forgotten the lessons of Watergate? *sigh* Same as it ever was... Posted by: Lizard Queen at September 9, 2003 09:12 AM McGovern was also not as strong a candidate as Dean appears to be. His handling of Eagleton was a disaster, as was his waffling on several of his programs. He never got to debate Nixon and, as Nathan points, the party was badly divided over his candidacy. Neither factor will be in play in next year's election. Posted by: Paleo at September 9, 2003 12:19 PM I live in New Hampshire, and there are "Dean/McGovern 2004 - Conservative Landslide" signs appearing here. Who's behind www.deanmcgovern.com? Democrats, Republicans? What's next? Dean/Mondale? Dean/Carter? OK, OK, the connection is the anti-war thing, but come on? Who spends money on this kind of crap? Seems like it's always Rebublicans... so what are they afraid of? Posted by: Michael Witthaus at November 17, 2003 08:47 PM pissing Posted by: som at August 24, 2004 07:02 AM Post a comment
