<< Mass. to Make Health Care a Right | Main | Why Kerry? >> July 16, 2004GOP Pisses Away Its Political FutureForget this election. The GOP seems dedicated to making sure it faces gradual extinction as new voting groups come to dominate the political landscape. The immigrant-bashing in the early 1990s, epitomized by Prop 187 in California, turned a generation of Latinos and many Asian-Americans into diehard Democrats. Now, polls show that Arab-Americans, naturally a socially conservative group, have turned against the GOP because of the Patriot Act and other anti-muslim policies of the Bush Administration. It's not just that Kerry leads among these voters by a gaping amount; check out these comments: More than half of those who chose Mr Kerry cited being "against Republicans" as the main reason for their decision.Bush makes verbal noises of being racially inclusive, but his policies tell a different story, and he is helping cement a strong Democratic majority in the future as more and more non-white immigrant children attain voting age in coming years. Posted by: QuickSauce at July 16, 2004 06:59 PM The AFL-CIO has been going after the immigrants for some time now. Look at the SEIU. The fastest growing labor union has the most Latinos and African Americans in its rank and file. Posted by: Doug at July 16, 2004 10:40 PM Would the number of Arab Americans switching to the Democratic Party be greater than that of Jewish Americans switching to the GOP? Unlikely. The article is not based on any data. The premises are 1) American Jews are becoming highly Orthodox and, therefore, Republican. Or 2) American Jews are inter-marrying and, so, becoming White, therefore Republican. This is hilarious stuff. Further evidence that the most important weapon for Republicans is still a weak education system. Posted by: foo at July 18, 2004 05:24 PM I'll confirm this post. At a conference sponsored by Tikkun, a multi-denominational (but mainly Jewish) peace group, last year, there was a muslim speaker who was shaking his head in amazement while saying that Bush was driving Muslims into the Democratic party "with all the gays." Posted by: Kevin Block-Schwenk at July 18, 2004 10:54 PM Bush's radicalism risks splitting the GOP. That's a good thing. Posted by: Melanie at July 19, 2004 04:33 PM Kevin, I kind of think that any Muslim speaker at Tikkun is apt to be rather more liberal than the average Muslim, which is not to say that there isn't a paradigm shift in their community because there is. What I think their community, and the Sikh community has seen and been subject to in the past 4 years from special registration to an increase in hate crimes, is enough for them to switch party registration en masse. In the end, it's all about survival. There's a definite reason that African Americans are one of the Democratic Party's biggest voting blocs.
