<< Random Thoughts | Main | Retails Sales Down, Unemployed Up >> September 02, 2004Zell Praised SegregationistLet's be clear. Zig-zag Zell made his career as henchman to segregationists, zagged to being a "New South" Democrat when that could get him elected, and now has zigged back to standing with racist southern conservatism now that he thinks that's where the power is. Lester Maddox, the governor who rode into office on the notoriety of driving blacks out of his restaurant, died this summer and Zell Miller was there to praise his old boss: "The Maddox administration was a good one, marked by historic and progressive achievements," said U.S. Sen. Zell Miller, Maddox's former chief of staff. "History will judge his administration well."Haters-- that's today's GOP. Welcome to your new party, Zell. And good riddance. Update: And let me give Andrew Sullivan a word on Zell: I kept thinking of the contrast with the Democrats' keynote speaker, Barack Obama, a post-racial, smiling, expansive young American, speaking about national unity and uplift. Then you see Zell Miller, his face rigid with anger, his eyes blazing with years of frustration as his Dixiecrat vision became slowly eclipsed among the Democrats. Remember who this man is: once a proud supporter of racial segregation, a man who lambasted LBJ for selling his soul to the negroes. His speech tonight was in this vein, a classic Dixiecrat speech, jammed with bald lies, straw men, and hateful rhetoric. And like the old Dixiecrats, Zell has found his final resting place in the GOP. Posted by: Joshua at September 2, 2004 06:51 PM Thanks, Nathan, for providing historical context to your viewers. I can only guess why Miller didn't switch parties back in 1964. Any ideas? But you are a little out of date with your current perspective. You've heard (see DigbysBlog, Hullaballoo, today) that the GOP distanced itself from Miller's convention remarks? Lott had made his comment about Strom in '48 several times before. What really happened? Born-Again Bush wsa moving the old Racist Right out, and replacing it with the Religious Right. That's what Frist is, in fact. The new Ambassador to the UN is John "Born Again" Danforth. Christ is coming, don't you know, and Israel has to be safe! Then they are going to kill, or convert, all the Jews. And a good time was had by all! Cheers. Bush in his keynote address for Bill Clinton in 1992 (when that "past" was 12 years less so and arguably even more relevant)? Or is this another liberal double standard? Michael Dukakis was also a liberal from Massachusetts. JFK was killed by a Communist, not a Southern segregationist, so I don't see the relevance of the assassination reference. Posted by: Clay Waters at September 4, 2004 01:43 PM Yes, but Dukakis was never the president. Posted by: Ruester at September 5, 2004 03:52 AM Hay, Zel is the least of the Democrats problems. Old White Sheets and Al Gore's daddy fought all they could against the Equal Rights Bill in 1964. Just like you forget Ted's little murder in Mass. If a leftist Hate America First Democrat commits a violent crime just sweep it under the White Sheets...... Posted by: Puff Driver at September 13, 2004 08:00 PM Actually, according to you idiots, us liberals Posted by: ruester at September 15, 2004 03:16 AM My point is that Zel was a great manin 92 when he was all fired up as the keynote for Clinton.
