Retails Sales Down, Unemployed Up

Two big bad economic numbers for Bush going into his speech:

  • Seasonally adjusted jobless claims for the week ended Aug. 28 rose by 19,000 to 362,000 from an unrevised 343,000 in the previous week.

  • Retailers reported worse-than-expected August sales Thursday.

Some of the unemployment claims can be blamed on hurricaines in Florida, but the overall trend lines in the economy still show little job growth.
