Founder of Health Care System
"Greatest Canadian"

Well the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation held a contest and the winner was Tommy Douglas, the socialist leader of Saskatchewan, who pioneered the state-financed health care system that was eventually adopted nationwide in Canada.

Well, Douglas has no doubt saved more lives and improved the health of more people in Canada than anyone else, so it's a pretty reasonable choice. And Canada's health care system is one of its most identifiable national characteristics, so it's a pretty good choice on that basis as well.
