Oscars: Model for Democracy

As a big fan of using proportional representation in elections to better reflect the diversity of political viewpoints, I was a bit surprised and pleased to find that the Oscars use proportional representation to nominate the five candidates for each slot. The process means that the first choice of any 20% of the voting population would make the cut-- rather than stacking the list with choices with broad but shallow support.
