Transit Budget Insanity

So Bush is proposing eliminating the $1.2 billion spent each year to fund Amtrak. More broadly mass transit will face a broad squeeze on federal support.

In New York City, working families have faced massive fare hikes in the last few years even as the system needs massive upgrading of its infrastructure; it's essentially near collapse as a recent subway fire showed.

So why would Bush slash basic help for mass transit, while giving $2 billion for a special high-speed rail link from downtown Manhattan to the Kennedy Airport? The daily life of train and subway riders will be made worse by Bush's budget, but his key priority is making sure wealthy jet-set New Yorkers have an easier commute to the airport. The message is clear: working families need to sacrifice to fund Bush's wars, but the wealthy base will continue to receive their goodies, whether tax cuts or high speed airport links, come hell or high water.
