OH Gay Marriage Ban Limits Domestic Assault Law

Want to know why AARP opposed the Ohio gay marriage initiative? Because it not only banned gay marriage but declared that no law could give "legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals."

Which led a judge in Ohio to declare that domestic violence laws are invalid when applied to a man beating up his live-in girlfriend. So any protections for unmarried people living together (which includes a lot of older folks- cue AARP involvement), from hospital visitations to private company benefits extended to such partners, are under legal threat by the ban, the most comprehensive in the country.

So here's the agenda of the religious right: save the lives of a comotose woman, but encourage live-in girlfriends getting beat up.
