David Corn on Today's Rallies
Corn rips into the sectarian organizers of today's rally in DC. I've written quite a bit in the past (especially here) about how ANSWER is a front group for nasty people who think North Korea and other dictatorships are fine regimes, despite murdering dissidents in their own country. Letting such people lead the movement is bound to undermine it and drive away the vast majorities in this country who now oppose this war.
But one correction to Corn's story, for those who keep track of sectarian splits. The particular folks behind ANSWER used to be part of the Workers World Party but have split off and founded their own group, the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
BTW to make it clear-- I love all sorts of socialist groups, just not these particular folks who celebrate the murder of workers and students by governments like North Korea and China.
I am happy that tens of thousands of people are marching against the war, but it's all the sadder that there is no leadership by the organizers to convert that into anything other than another march, since that's all that ANSWER does. People will say, "at least ANSWER is working hard on organizing," but strategy and message matter and there is good reason that the antiwar movement is so much smaller than the general population that has rejected this war.
Update: Marc Cooper has more.
