The Abandonment of New Orleans

If anything proves that the Bush administration doesn't give a shit about New Orleans, it's that the city is scrambling to find funds for Mardi Gras.

If New Orleans has any chance for revival, it needs to revive its tourism. And nothing is more key to that than Mardi Gras, a centerpiece of its tourism every year, both as a single event and as advertising for general tourism. A successful Mardi Gras would signal to the nation and the world that the French Quarter was open for year-round revelry.

And yet the feds have not stepped up with the funding to make Mardi Gras happen. About all you need to know about the abandonment of the City.
